Healing with Light - History

Using light in healing is not a new concept. In fact the priests in China, Babylon and Egypt used colored light in many of their healing practices.

One of the most basic forms of healing light that is vital to our health is sunlight and this type of therapy was a common practice amongst the ancient Greeks, Chinese and Romans to cure psoriasis and other skin disorders.

Modern day medicine accepts light therapy to a certain extent and ultra violet phototherapy is combined with creams containing psoralen to heal psoriasis. Infared light treatments were utilised by the Nobel Prize winner, Dr Neils Finsen back in the 1890's to heal scars caused by German measles and small pox.

Yet only fifty years ago the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of coloured light in healing, dismissing it as a sham practice.

Recent research has started to validate the use of light energy in healing and full spectrum light boxes are renown for their effectiveness in treating winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The FDA also have approved phototherapy procedures like Lumatron and healing light therapies are used in numerous methods and treatments from laser heart revascularization to laser surgery for those with eye disease caused by diabetes.
